Biography

I am Susana Cruz, I was born in Madrid on October 21, 1992. I studied Materials Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and later a Master’s Degree in Business Consulting. I have no academic studies related to art, but since my childhood I have been painting, I don’t remember when I started. First with pencils and charcoal. Then I experimented with watercolors, until, when I turned 10 years old, I fell in love with oil painting.

“Painting allows me to express myself and immerse myself in my world. I have even cried while painting and most of the time my skin crawls when I listen to good music in the background while I let myself be carried away by the oil painting.”

​I started to define my style thanks to the time I lived in Italy. The sculptures I chose as models were not chosen at random: they awakened something special in me and made me see reflected in them everything I wanted to transmit. A means to release my emotions. And although they all tell stories of classical mythology as precious as they are tragic, in my canvases they take on a totally different meaning… without losing their essence.

Currently, my work is inspired by baroque painting, and the passion for the dramatic use of chiaroscuro, taken to a more personal terrain with what I have learned in my previous works without abandoning that personality that characterizes me. Movement, fabrics, transparencies and faces that reflect the most human and at the same time divine side.

​My work is characterized by the use of white, brown shades and black; fine brushstrokes, calm and soft, in contrast, with a very marked and expressive palette knife technique. I merge the background with the figure, giving the work dynamism and freedom.
